Did Jay Gatsby rebel against an unforgiving fate or was he attempting an escape from the familiar? Was Daisy just a meek and futile excuse or was she the outcome of a defenestration of received wisdom? An allegorical knowledge that swore allegiance to convention smothering and bludgeoning the braves daring to buck the trend. Was he a man who was way before his time or Diderot’s Jacques, a resigned fatalist succumbing to illusion just to please his employer?
