EPHEMERAL MIST

This was Beatrice’s version of paradise. Her very own personal ocean of tranquility. A blessed Heaven on Mother Earth. The lush carpet of green muffled her every walking step and it was as though she was floating on thin, velvety rarefied air. The slow rolling mists that gradually enveloped the mansions before making their way slowly towards the dense woods beyond made Beatrice realise that life was ephemeral and temporary.

This was what made her do what she did the first Tuesday of every year. She imparted the lessons of permanence to one chosen brethren of humanity. Each designated individual was put out of his misery. Bones never lie.

This Tuesday was no different. Beatrice gazed at the mist about to envelope the very woods where yet another fortunate man grasped the very essence of life before resting six feet under.
