Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata, Edward G. Seidensticker (Translator)

Snow

A deep, dense and intriguing fictional narrative involving Shimamura a follower of occidental ballets, from Tokyo, Komako a Geisha who spends her life in a snow draped valley and Yoko a docile and meek woman nursing a young man who is on the brink of death with no hopes of making a revival. The relationship between the three characters is one of intrigue, trust and deceit, a brew of paradoxes. The transient sadness and inevitable futility running throughout the story forms the highlight of Kawabata’s much acclaimed work.

But unfortunately this type of melancholia is not my cup of tea!

“Snow Country” – A cold offering.
