The Barometer of Human Greed

It was happening again. For the third consecutive day, the Air Pollution Sensors were showing measurements skewed towards the adverse. Before replacing the sensor back into its sheath, Siew Kuan (SK) gazed one last time at the reading, vainly hoping that her own eyes might have deceived her. However, hope did not compromise accuracy as the number was still at a ridiculous high of 1654! A measure, which was three times higher than the stipulated range for being “hazardous”.

In an era where Gross Domestic Product represented the sine qua non of a nation’s progress, both hope and hopelessness were reduced to a simple but uncompromisng measure of growth. The extraordinarily beautiful SK made her entry for the day:

“Consumption over Carbon Monoxide; Oligarchy over Ozone; Greed over Green; Structures over sunsets. Forgive us Mother Earth even though we clearly know what we are doing!”
